%X The landscape of the northern coast of São Paulo State has been continually reshaped since its first settlements, but the speed, frequency and magnitude of these changes has increased during the second half of the 20th century. Land use and land cover change (LULCC) monitoring provides actionable tools for management and territorial planning, as it may help explain the historic process of land use change over time. Our study quantified LULCC in the northern coast of São Paulo state, from 1980 to present. Changes over time were classified using the Support Vector Machine algorithm, and LULCC change maps were computed after classification. Within the state parks, more than 80% of the original cover has remained as forest since 1985. Anthropogenic land uses observed within the parks are mostly rural areas, revealed by the presence of grasslands and secondary forest. Outside the protected areas, urban land use has triplicated in area, responding for more than 18% of the total LULCC outside the parks. Most of this growth has happened by replacement of rural (grassland) and natural areas. Population in the region increased from 87,700 to 295,135 inhabitants between 1985 and 2015, and our study suggests that construction of the BR-101 highway and other large enterprises are responsible for such urban growth. Still, the low fraction of LULCC observed inside protected areas suggests that the state parks are being effective in protecting the native forests.
